We have a mare with navicular, she is on 1 gram of bute every other day. If we decide to breed her will the bute affect the foal or the mare during pregnancy? Thanks, Mark |

Hello Mark, We know bute can have some effects on the fetus but I have heard of mares treated with low doses through out pregnancy that have normal foals. There are several other reasons that you should reconsider breeding this mare: 1) If her feet hurt her now how uncomfotable will she be at 10 months pregnancy? 2) Is navicular disease a genetic problem? Consider these carefully and remember you can buy them better and cheaper than you can breed them. The Advisor Vet, RN Oglesby DVM |

I am giving 1 gram of bute daily to a mare who foundered. I plan on doing an embryo transfer in February and was wondering if the bute will damage the embryo. |

Shannon, The post above pretty much addresses what we know. There are effects but healthy foals have been born. I presume you are moving the embryo out of the foundering mare. A question that might follow is there something to sub for the bute safer? I do not have any safer suggestions. DrO |
