Can anyone tell me what their experiences are with mares that have cysts in their uterous? I have a beautiful 10 year old mare that has for a long while had one small cluster of 3 cysts in her uterous and then last year another one started forming. We see them when we ultrasound for pregnancies. We have had reasonable success with pregnancies with fresh transported semen however I am wondering if the cysts will eventually cause a problem or are indicative of a hormonal problem. I have heard that if the cysts cover too much area of the uterous then the pregnancy can be compromised....what percentage would this be??
So if any of you have such mares with good conception rates I would love to hear from you!

The literature states that large or numerous cysts are associated with lowered reproductive efficiency. However there has been very little critical work done on this so there are no hard numbers. I once saw printed that any cyst over 25mm could be associated with lowered repro efficiency and I do not know if I believe this. One of my past associate veterinarians owned a mare with somewhere between 12 and 14 cysts some as large as 25 mm and though it took repeated covers we have settled her twice with one foal on the ground and the last still in her the last I heard. They have moved to CA. The only problem is we could never make the pregnancy out until the embryo became evident.
