I'm looking at a mare with a biopsy grade of 2b. She has had one healthy foal in 1997, lost one 30 days before 1998 due date, foal born alive, but too premature. Mare retained the placenta 3 days. Owners had her treated to prevent founder, which they successfully prevented.

Mare was left open 1999 season, biopsied previous to 2000 season. Came back with a 2B. Owners treated her with plasma, which is supposed to rejuvenate the uterine lining, rebred her via AI, and mare caught on first breeding.

Mare was then sold to a place with an altitude of 10,000 ft, when she was accustomed to 7300 ft. She lost a lot of weight and had altitude shock, and subsequently lost her pregnancy at 30 days. Current owner says the vet told them she is fine.

What's the opinion on this board? Is this mare worth BSE'ing and considering as a broodmare, or should I keep looking?

Hello Lori,
We really do not have enough information to make an informed decision. I would want a new repro exam and biopsy then have it compared with the last one. If you want to fly by the seat of your pants, she is risky business.

That's enough for me. I've already bought one barren brood mare (fungus Shire mare lost pregnancy at 5 mos--fungus came back), don't need another one around. I guess the safest thing to do (as far as I can see) is buy older Shire fillies or young mares past 7 mos pregnant with their first!

At any rate, I have a nice little leopard App mare that is coming up on 5 mos, looking nice and gently rounded, so I'll have a baby in Sept anyhow. Just wish it was a Shire!!

Ah well, maybe next year from my filly. She'll be 3 in 2001.

We were able to return a mare to fertility who had a history of aborting at seven months by performing a D&C during a heat cycle. She had been barren ten years and had always easily conceived but aborted consistently.

Cultures and biopsies failed to show any problem. A uterine problem was assumed as cultures were clean and Regumate had previously been tried. She conceived on the cycle following treatment and produced a large and very healthy filly.

She was rebred on her first regular (not foal) heat cycle and conceived. She is still in foal due next month.

I wouldn't advise buying this mare, but if anyone has a mare with a uterine problem you might consider this treatment.
