i have been riding my mare lightly, once a week for 1/2 hour for the last 3-4 months. She is 5 1/2 months pregnant.
I am wondering about increasing her level of activity, with basic dressage riding, to perhaps 3 hours a week.
not all at once but gradually over a months time.

Hello Lori,
Mares differ on how well they handle pregnancy so you must look at here as an individual to decide what is right for her. We have guidelines for exercise in the article associated with this forum}.

Lori, following up on what Dr. O said.. I had one mare I rode and showed thru her first 9 months, she was fine with the work, I have a mare this season that pooped out in her 6th month.. just was plain tired, not that she did not enjoy the walking out, but she showed signs of fatigue very quickly... she now is out on her own exercise routine... They all are different.. and all carry the foals differently.. this mare I speak of now.. has gotten big fast, not fat.. she is a maiden mare as well...

On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

I was told that I needed to wait 45-60 days after my mare is bred to get back on her. My vet, after verifying she is pregnant (today! Yay!) said I can get back on her now. She was running the barrels before she was bred. He says we can go back to that. What say you, Dr. O?

Jennifer-

We competed a pregnant mare in two 50 mile endurance rides, last the national championships, while 2 months pregnant.

Mare was in great shape prior to pregnancy, Vets had no problem with us continuing.

Hi Jennifer, I am not a vet but I have never heard about waiting 45 days befroe riding.
After breeding the above mare never missed a beat until about her 8th month, quite clearly she told me, I'm on maternity leave, ride something else.

Ok. I'm glad to know this. I was told I could ride her after 45-60 days, and now my OB vet, who specializes in reproduction is like, get on her, ride her and get her running again (she is a barrel horse). So... I'm excited to know I can still ride her. My vet also told me that I could ride her and compete on her until she tells me otherwise, sort of like your Mare, Lori. Thanks for the input.
