Hello,
I am a biology student at High Point University. My question is, where can I find documentation of studies relating to the use of extenders; mainly the "how and why" of use, amounts needed, trials for proper administration and use. Any scientific research on the development of extenders will greatly help me out. Thank you so much.

Dr. O
It is my understanding, maybe I am totally wrong, that extenders are used to enhance the length (amount/quantiy) or use of stallion's sperm for artificial insemination. Mayby I am using a "very' layman's term. I would like to understand and know how this process works. If there are any studies on the use of extenders, please direct me in the right direction. Thank you.

Ohhh semen extenders, if I had taken the time to see which forum you posted in I would have made the connection.

Yes, it is surprising but the contents of equine seminal fluid are spermicidal. In as little as 30 minutes at room temperature, horse sperm begins to loose viablility and potency that can be greatly attenuated with semen extenders. Also extenders provide extra nutrients and in some cases contain antimicrobials to decrease the bacterial contamination in every ejaculate.

I have just added a lot of scientific summaries on semen extenders at: Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Artifical Insemination. Hope it helps!
