Dr O, I have finally received a copy of the results of a culture done to my mare. The vet just couldn't find the time to come out and start the treatment so he sent the report. From what I can tell this is what it says. There are 3 organisms present. "Moderate growth of Beta Hemolytic Strep Zooepidemicus", "Light Growth of Pasteurella Multocida" and "Few Colonies of Coagulase Negative Staph". There seems to be a sensitivity report too but am not sure how to read it. I have read your report on "GRAM NEGATIVE UTERINE INFECTIONS" and it looks as though Ticarcillin is a most effective medication and it is one that is listed on the report, along with Ceftigfur (sp) and Timentin. All these have "-sss" after them which I believe stands for "Sensitive". The original vet talked about doing flushes over 4-5 days. So then, would the antibiotics be injected or be infused into the Uterus? It seems like that was what was being indicated......is that done? Do you think there is a possibility we can cure this thing or will we have to have periodic flushes? I will be very intrested in your advice.

Thanks Much!

Hello Sylvia,
Has a cytology been done (see, Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility: Uterine Culture and Cytology)? All of the organisims you have can be just normal contaminants, though the strep can go either way: check it with a cytology.

If treatment is undertaken it will be done by placing the medication in the uterus and this is probably not a chronic problem.

Hi Dr. O,

Only a culture was done. So, the cytology is needed to be sure that no bacteria is introduced while collecting for a culture? It sounds like a culture is of no real benefit then. I wonder why a vet wouldn't advise us of that? Oh well, let me ask this, will a cytology show if there is fungus present?.....this girl is carrying around about 2 gallons of pus. Something sure is happening.

I'll advise the owners what you suggest. As soon as we can find a vet that is reliable (how does one know?) we'll get a cytology done.

Once again, Thank You.

Sylvia, if you have two gallons of puss in the uterus (This should have been included in your post above) you do not need a cytology to prove there is pus in the uterus and I would consider the culture results important. The indications and significance of these tests are explained in the Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility: Uterine Culture and Cytology.
