I have recently acquired an older bred PMU mare. She's over 15, probably close to 20 (percheron/TB), and obviously very used to foaling. However, she hasn't had any immunizations in the past and she's due in 5-6 weeks. I have wormed her without a problem (ivermectin first, followed 2 weeks later by a panacur power pack). Her body condition is probably a 6 or 7 -- slightly hard to tell because her belly is so large it pulls down over her back -- I can see her backbone. She had been in a stable herd and I transported her, so I know she wasn't exposed to much enroute. We've had her for 3 weeks. My questions is, should I give immunizations now and what can I safely give her without her system freaking out? Is there an increased risk since she hasn't had them before? |

She should receive them now Connie as they will help protect the foal also. She may even need a primary series for tetanus, encephalitis, flu and rhino. For more on what this means see Care for Horses » Vaccines & Coggin's Test » Vaccines an Overview. Follow the link to the schedules for specific recommendations for pregnant mares. DrO |
