Posted on Thursday, Mar 23, 2006 - 5:33 pm: I have a 22 yr old Quarter mare who has 90 days to go in her pregnancy. I noticed today she is showing signs of heat big time to our gelding. Does anyone know if a mare can still be preg and in heat at this stage? My vet will be comeing out on sat to check her. |

She looked really silly at 330 days, with her big belly, acting like she was in heat... In the earlier part of her pregnancy (45 days in) she was showing so strongly that I had an ultrasound done - there was a foal. Continued to 'act in heat' like clockwork, but again showed VERY strongly 5 months in, a rectal palp confirmed she was still in foal. She was doing this with no other horses in sight. This mare, however, would, even when not in heat, raise her tail and 'wink' whenever she was very excited, like while running around during turn-out. Her now yearling daughter does the same - I first noticing her doing it at 5 mons old, I'm sure she could not started heat cycles at 5 mons old! It is good you are having your vet check your mare - I would want to know if there is something to be anticipating or not! My vet took one look at mine with 90 days left to go and said, 'yep, she's pregnant'. When you see them everyday, you don't always notice the physical changes that are starting to happen... I hope there's one in there for ya!Lee C |

He is a 4yr paint and very quiet. I think if he were alittle more talkative he might win her over. Anyway we ended up useing my paint mare and collecting with her to ai this Quarter mare. When she was pronounced in foal the vet and I both were extemely happy. This old mare has some great old Quarter horses in her back ground and Im so looking forward to this baby. The mare has had so many babies that she has a big belly anyway so its hard to tell if shes still in foal or not. The vet will be out tomorrow to check her out, so Im praying its ok.Mary |

The vet said she must have absorbed it. He said that is the trouble you run into when you breed older mares. Thank you for your concern.Mary |

Was she left open a few years, as I have heard that when older mares are left open for a season or two, it is harder to get them to settle and keep them. My vet keeps saying, a healthy, happy uterus is a pregnant one.I was talking to a breeder this year in B.C, and her 28 year old mare has foaled every year, and finally slipped this year - at the age of 28. So here's hoping you have some time left yet and you will get that baby you are looking for! |

I have not had the vet out to confirm it took but she has not come back in. I plan on haveing him come out next week to give everyones shots, then have him palpate the 2 I bredThanks for your concern. Mary. |
