I had my mare ultrasounded today at 16 days and discovered that she had twins, one in each horn. My vet gave her a mild sedative as well as a shot of banamin and proceeded to pinch off the smaller embroy of the twins. When this was finished she told me i would need to give her 5 ccs IM of Banamin through Sunday. This is the mare's second foal and the vet told me that both embryos were very healthy. My concern is how high is my mare's risk now to absorb the remaining embryo? Will the banamin shots help reduce this risk? My vet said that there was a good likelyhood that she would not absorb the remaining embryo. She is scheduled to be ultrasounded again in five days to see if she absorbed the remaining embryo. I am very worried and fearful that she will absorb this remaining embryo despite my vet's confidence that she will not. The mare is very healthy and up to date on all shots and worming. She is 14 yrs old.
THe vet also told me to start my mare on prenatal vitamins. The prenatal vitamin she has my mare started on is Select Equi-Cell in the liquid format. Has anyone heard about this type of supplement? This is my first foal and I am full of questions and very nervous. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
