I have a 2 year old who has a previous injury to her hock that will keep her from ever being ridden, according to Texas A&M vet Dr. Craybill. I bought her for breeding only at the age of 9 mo. She is now 2 and I need to know if this is too early to breed her. Is there a body condition that needs to be reached or a maturity level that should be seen before breeding? She was raised with other mares w/foals and does have a motherly attitude about her. I know she will be a great mother, I just want to be sure I don't breed her too soon. |

This is not a question that has any scientific study behind it Rhonda so you will find a variety of answers. I suggest you wait until at least 30 months of age. This insures that by the time she is 6 months pregnant and the growing foal starts making demands on the mare that most of the long bones in the skeletal system are finished growing. DrO |
