Hello Dr. O

Question for you. I have a mare at a breeding station that houses the stallion I am breeding to. We started the latter part of March to breed her and so far nothing. I just received a message that she was checked for preg May 9th which was neg. and has not cycled since. She has had 2 shots of Estermate. They said her ovaries are getting small again and want to know if I want to give her a FSH shot. What are your thoughts?
Thank You

Sully

Oh maybe I should mention this mare has had 2 foals. Last one 6 yrs ago. 2 yrs ago she was preg. with twins and lost both when they went to pinch one off. She is 17 yrs old.

Sully,
If we assume that the problem is that the mare has quit cycling, instead of addressing a single point, I would prefer to address the whole cycle. Regumate is uniquely able to put a cycle back on track for more see Equine Reproduction » Horse Breeding & Artificial Insemination » Stimulating Mares to Cycle Early. I have to admit I might instead be interested in experimenting with the sulpiride treatment also detailed in that article.

Though I have had mares that quit cycling midseason the number one problem that always deserves consideration is management. Maybe your mare is irregular in a way that her cycles fall below the radar of the breeding station. For more see, Equine Reproduction » Horse Breeding & Artificial Insemination » Heat Detection, Ovulation Prediction, and Timing Insemination.
