I'm after any information on the current and past debates on the use of artifical insemination in the thoroughbred industry in Australia in particular but any help will be welcome. |

Graham, run a keyword search on "artificial insemination". I don't know about over there but here you are not supposed to if you plan to register as a TB, though a strict interpretation of the Jockey Club rules might not prevent collection on the mare you are going to inseminate. As to whether this loop hole has been in the past year or so I do not know. DrO |

Dr. O, I don't know if you are comfortable on posting your opinion on this - and I understand if you don't...but I am wondering what you think about the Jockey Club's continual refusal to consider allowing artificial insemination as a means of breeding for their registry. It is a well known here that many of the big breeding farms do AI already. You are told to drop your mare off in the morning and send the van for her in the afternoon. Of course it is kept top secret. If the Jockey Club is worried about how many foals will be produced by a stallion, why don't they just limit the number of foals that can be registered by a stallion in a given year? I just don't understand the rational. |

No problem at all Linda but as a matter of fact I too do not understand why they do not support AI considering they could limit the number of foals registered. If you are looking for a possible rationale consider the idea that the breeding process is part of what makes horses, horses. In the long run you might be breeding animals that can no longer functionally mate. I know it seems like a long shot and quite frankly I believe it really is because it is a stodgy organization that runs a bit behind the times. DrO |

Which is an interesting idea considering the recent case of Barbaro. He may not be able to breed live cover, but could probably easily be collected. I am hoping when some of the old guard dies off that the registry will come to their senses. So many farms are already doing AI in secret. |
