Dr. O I gave a mare of mine a lavage with saline and monoose on day one of her heat cycle followed by Oxytocin shots for 2 days every 6 hours and breed mare on day 3 and 5 of her heat cycle. Per vets instructions , well I just noticed I gave the mare the wrong drug for 2 days it was banamine not oxytocin. Should I still give oxytocin to this mare and still clear her uterus since I bread her yesterday at day 5? My vet is out of town or I would ask her . The mare had EED because of fluid build up after a foal she had aborted at 290 days old. any input would be appreciated. Thank you

We are now about 38 hours post breeding and it is not too late to try a shot of oxytocin to attempt to remove accumulated uterine fluid. As to whether this alone will clear the uterus is uncertain, for more on how we recommend treatment see Diseases of Horses » Reproductive Diseases » Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility » Uterine Infection and Inflammation.
