Dr. O,

Have you seen any figures on the percentage of twin pregnancies that are missed by ultrasound diagnostics? I just heard about a late term twin abortion and was wondering how effective early detection actually is.

Thanks,
Lisa

Hello Lisa,
No I have not seen such a study. The accuracy of the procedure will vary with:
1) How quiet the mare is during the procedure.
2) How good the restraint is.
3) The age of the embryos.
4) The quality of the machine and that all important:
5) How experienced the operator is.

Thank you...I'm getting a bit nervous about my own mare now - due in March (ultrasounded last at 39 days). So far so good!

I recently found out my mare is pregnant with twins. It is now too late to pinch, as now it is day 56. What do I do now. I really would like to try to carry these babies to term if the natural occurrence of absorption doesn't happen. I would like to know what kind of mare care if any is available that would give me a better chance of carrying to term.

Noelle,
Instead of posting your question at the bottom of someone elses discussion you should create your own. You will get more responses and it helps others find related information better. This is the appropriate forum for your topic, so just back up to the Page where all the discussions are listed. The easiest way to do this is using the navigation bar at the top of this page and selecting it. Once there take the time to read the article on this disease. Then return and post any questions you might still have by pushing the Create a New Conversation button.
