DrO and all-
Gosh has it ever been awhile since I've been here. Anyway, I am looking for any and all information on transported cooled semen and breeding a mare with it. I'm looking for a stud to breed my mare for a 03 foal and that's the route I'll probably have to go to get the foal I want. I'm new to the breeding scene and am desperate to learn anything I can. I tried to read the article here, but a little hard for me to understand. I want to know success rates, timing the cycle, preparing the mare...what to ask the breeder, the person handling the insemination of my mare, etc...anything to get my feet wet on the subject. Thanks so much.

Hello Stephany,
If you are new to breeding you should start with the articles that present an overview of reproduction, most if not all your questions are answered there, and then you will understand the AI process better. Fertility rates with good semen and good procedure approach that of natural cover in healthy horses and can actually improve conception rates in cases of horses with problems.

DrO-
I did find some articles that were a little easier to read. I think I bumped into the scientific studies the first time. I'll read over the others again and get back to you with questions, I'm sure. *grin* Thanks, again.

Dr. O
I am considering AI for my 6 year old German Warmblood who has not been breed before. I am interested in what the statistics are for male vs. female births using AI vs. natural covering by the stallion. Thanks. Also I love your site. It is fabulous for news about all sorts of questions the literature never quite addresses.
