My 3 1/2 year old QH mare is bred, and it was confirmed via ultrasound after 30 days. She was acting as though in heat when we did the ultrasound, and she was acting as though she was in heat a few days ago. Is this normal? Is there anything I should be concerned about? Is there a chance that she has lost the baby, or that she will lose the baby easier if she continues going in heat? I know that the article states there are sometimes that mares continue to cycle, i just wanted to know if this would make it easier for her to lose the baby and if there was anything i can do about it.Thanks for any help.

As the article says this is within the range of normal for mares and pregnant mares that do it are not at increased risk of abortion. However a mare that loses her baby prior to day 45 will return to heat so that is the concern.

Thank you Dr. O, tomorrow marks day 45. I think I will have her ultrasounded again at 90 days just to make sure everything is alright in there. I believe I read that the embryo attaches to the uterus around day 75?

Attachment occurs about day 40, following fixation at about day 15. At 90 days a palpation is all that is required to confirm pregnancy: after all it is the size of a bowling ball at this point.

Oh, day 40, thanks. Is there a stat that most abortions occur before a certain day? I'm not sure if this is accurate, but would there be a greater chance of abortion before attachment. I'm so sorry, I just worry about her aborting early. Thanks.
