We took in a 23 Y/O TB mare at the end of May and I have yet to see her show any signs of heat. As a broodmare, she was going to be shipped to auction because she didn't catch on her last breeding. I was told that she had a cyst, hence the reason for her being unable to become pregnant. She is in a pasture which shares a common fence with my very studdish gelding, but we've seen nothing at all - could it be the cyst that is causing her not to cycle? Being a broodmare since she was 4, I would think that she would show some sign of heat. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.}

I have also been reading posts regarding young horses becoming pregnant - we rescued an injured yearling filly off of a Colorado feedlot in the spring who has also shown no signs of heat to date - would that most likely be due to her age and not cycling yet or could pregnancy really be a concern at such a young age?

Thanks in advance for any help regarding both of these situations.

Hi Stephany- at 23 she may well be too old to concieve, I consider this age to be iffy. I have a 19 year old mare that has several cysts, vet was not concerned about those, she was very hard to get infoal this year but it was not due to cysts- she had a major infection that had to be dealt with first, she finally 'took' in early July after many lavages and several breedings, since March.
Yes yearlings can breed, yours wouldn't be the first to be 'in foal'.
Hope that helps.

Hello Stephany,
let me redirect you to two articles. The first deals with the normal heat cycle, which it is not clear from your post you are not having, and the second with abnormal cycles.
  • Equine Reproduction » Horse Breeding & Artificial Insemination » Breeding Patterns in Mares and Stallions
  • Diseases of Horses » Reproductive Diseases » Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility »
  • Abnormal Heat Cycles (Estrus)
Chris has a point, though I have had a 23 yo mare conceive and deliver many mares by this time will not settle easy, though those in good health often are still cycling.
