I recently had a blood test done on my mare. It came back negative. Could you tell me if there is any chance it may be wrong? We suspect she may be 6 months at least if she is. The vet didn`t say what he was testing for but he said it revealed her blood showed 1% of something and this meant she wasn`t in foal as those who are need to have at least 6%. Could you tell me what he may have been measuring and how come if she has a certain percent in her blood why is she not in foal.

Hello Mr DBJ,
No test is 100% reliable but I am afraid there are several different types of pregnancy test so am unable to comment on your results. You need to call your vet with pen in hand and write down all the amounts of what was tested for and once we have those we can comment of how reliable the test is.

My vet said it was ostrone (estrone) sulphate and only 1% of this showed in her blood.

Hello Miss Allen,
I like that better than DBJ. Lets see, the 1% designation does not make any sense. If a mare had this level whe would have over 1000 times as much estrone sulfate as most pregnant mares do. The results for estrone sulfate are generally expressed in the ng / ml range. We cover the use of estrone sulfate and pregnancy diagnosis in the article associated with this forum. Just click Pregnancy Diagnosis on the navigation bar above and then click on the articles title.
