Dear Dr. "O",

I would like very much your opinion re: EVA. AQHA has been very pro-active about vaccinating stallions, and being respondsible breeders we are about to do that. Because only one mare is currently bred, we will isolate her from the stud for 30 days after HIS vaccination, and let the other 3 open mares stay in the barn to get natural immunity from our colt - who is also stalled right in the barn near "his girls". The bred mare we will vaccinate after birth. Our question is this: the literature on the Internet from the AAEP says that after vaccinating a mare one year, you should isolate her from the other mares 30 days, but in future years - after vaccination - NO ISOLATION is necessary. If this is the case with mares, then does a stallion need to be isolated from mares with no immunity (as is the normal case) for 30 days in years AFTER HIS initial vaccination? In other words, after this year, would we have to isolate the colt following his annual vaccination ?
Also, does this virus live in a barn for any length of time? Once it is "in" a barn, is there a risk for years to come for non-protected horses?
Thanks so much, and FYI our colt (who had the awful hives) is doing great, we are currently weaning him off the tiny doses of Dex and Hydroxyzine with good success.
Thank you so much!

Hello Susan,
Thank you Susan,
I think you will find most of your questions answered at Diseases of Horses » Cardiovascular, Blood, and Immune System » Equine Viral Arteritis. If after reading this you still have questions post them to the EVA discussion board.
