From: catm To: horseadvicesales@horseadvice.com Subject: thanks Date: Sun, 14 Nov 1999 01:21:08 +0800 thank you this looks like a really great source of information that will be invaluable will pass it on to friends.
From: "Presslink" <preslink@iafrica.com> To: <roglesby@horseadvice.com> Subject: possible use of drawings Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 21:43:38 +0100 I am putting together an interactive multimedia for the South African National Equestrian Federation. This program will cover all aspects veterinary care of horses from lameness to skin diseases, stable management, shoeing, as well as the various FEI disciplines of riding. On the veterinary side we are fortunate to be working with Ondersterpoort (our veterinary college) but it would be so helpful if we could have use of some of your line drawings of the bone and muscle structures, also drawing of ageing a horse, which are excellent. We would be more than happy to credit your site and in fact we could put a hot link on the CD to the site, which has been a god send to me for checking information for this project. I really would appreciate any assistance in this project, its a fairly daunting task as I am sure will you appreciate. The ultimate aim of this project is to raise funds for the Federation, for the development of the sport, and hopefully prevent horses suffering unnecessarily through ignorance. Kind regards Barbara Sheat

From: horseymarcy To: horseadvice@horseadvice.com I enjoy the newsletters/website very much. I live on an isolated ranch, and being able to look things up when I have a question is really nice. I have definitely saved more than the yearly subscription fee, plus learned so much to boot! And, if it's necessary to go to the vet, it helps me to ask better questions concerning whatever condition might we might be faced with at that moment. Marcy |

Please let me know when my membership is up for renewal. I will be happy to renew it, even though I have been extremely busy in the past few months taking care of my babies. Sent to us from Chris on Wednesday, June 23, 1999 - I threw away an ad the other night for a new periodical devoted to horse health - my thoughts were, "Ha. I don't need this, I have the Horseman's Advisor when I need it. And it is much cheaper!" So, as I don't subscribe to some of these magazines, I both save money and do a little for the environment. Thanks, again. |

This site seems to be a goldmine of information and interesting discussions. Seems like I can find most anything I'll need here to be able to talk intelligently with a vet or get what the vet actually says interpreted. |

Dear Dr. Oglesby, Thank you so much for your response to my query. I didn't give you much time to respond, I realize. At any rate, you will be pleased to know that I went back to your website and prowled about for a while, and I have included a 5 star recommendation in my article, which will appear Wednesday. Sent to us from Carolyn, June 20, 1999 I've followed the Advisor for a few years (don't remember exactly), anyway I think it is absolutely fantastic. I just wished I could spend more time here. Thanks so much for all the knowledge. I learned more info here than my $80.00 horsebooks. They're all right but this site is better. Thanks again. Carolyn |

Subject: Thanks I just wanted to thank you for the information about founder and it's causes and effects. I had made the hardest decision of my life in May 1998. I humanely put my 7 year old Throughbred mare to sleep after countless years of x-rays, vet consultations and numerous farrier visits. She did give me a great colt who will always remind me that I did do the right thing. Thank you. Gretchen Donais |

Three day's ago one of my boarders was diagnosed with a large bowel torsion. He is 28 years old. The vet, Dr. Shirley McDonald, made him comfortable that evening and prepared his owner for the worst. A decision would have to be made in the morning, if he made it till then. the owner chose not to send him for surgey. Old horse, long trip and high cost made her decision. The vet returned in the morning and the horse was doing fine. We had him in the arena for the night to roll around and maybe be more comfortable. And if he was going to die I didn't want him stuck in my stall. He spent the night rolling and groaning. Is this one case out of a million that he has survived? It has been three day's since the bowel twisted and he is fine. As fine as a 28 year old horse can be. We are keeping a close eye on him and wondering if it will re-occur. I just wanted to share this happening with you. Your web site gave us something to read for that long night. Thanks. Charlie Campsall, Fort Steele, B.C. Canada |

Subject: Re: folic acid Thank goodness someone is saying that folic acid isn't safe! My EPM broodmare aborted at 8mo. a beautiful colt within 20 days of vet-prescribed folic acid oral supplementation. Got a 5 lb. bucket of the stuff which cost a fortune and everytime I look at the bucket I want to dump it out on the highway! I tell everyone I know with an EPM broodmare, stay away from folic acid. I am glad you have better information about this situation available at your site, I know now how this occurred. Hollihorse |

Not all the mail has been positive, at least not initially. Here was a discussion between DrO and a disgruntled visitor: From: Ken Wigal Subject: Membership Requirement To: roglesby I am very unhappy that one must now pay a subscription fee to acess information at the Horesman's Advisor web site. I see no alternative but to remove all my links to the H. A web site. Good day.-- Yours truly, Ken Wigal To: Ken Wigal Subject: Re: Membership Requirement Date sent: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 06:51:44 -0500 Hello Ken, We are sorry you feel the way you do. We have been providing The Advisor free for almost 5 years now. As it grew it has required more and more time and money to maintain, much less get new information into it. I either had to find some way to generate income and hire help or shut it down. I was not going to have a substandard site with questionable or out of date content. "The Advisor" today, is the result of close to 10,000 hours of work and the input of hundreds of experienced horsemen. We try to cover all topics of horse health bringing you the latest research filtered through my experiences as a equine veterinarian, equine breeder, trainer and rider. And we try to do it every day. If that is not worth one dollar and sixty seven cents a month to a horse owner, well, I have no business on the Web. It really comes down to I have to feed and clothe my family too. Robert N. Oglesby DVM From: Ken Wigal Subject: Re: Membership Requirement To:"Robert N. Oglesby DVM" Hello Robert, I have to apologize to you. I didn't take into consideration the fact that maintaining a good web site requires the expense of not just time but also of money, and a site such as yours requires more man hours than any one person can expend. And you subscription fee is not unreasonable. You still have the best equestrian site on the web and I'll stick with you. You deserve to see the fruits of your labors. I'll be subscribing today. Thank you. Ken Wigal To: Ken Wigal Subject: Re: Membership Requirement Date sent: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 06:09:38 -0500 Thanks for the kudos and we are delighted to have you. Robert N. Oglesby DVM |

Hello: I cannot tell you how much I really enjoyed these articles! I have been riding, showing, and training quarter horses for about twenty years and have just recently purchased my first Tennessee Walker! The articles I found by you were easily read and understood, yet very informative. I appreciated finding access to these and look forward to finding more like them. I need all the help I can get in understanding the differences in gaits and style, what's best, what's most desirable, and training features. Thank you for this site! Sincerely, Barbara Tedford |

I'm a recent visitor to your site and also a recent horse owner, with many more questions than answers. I have veterinary style reference books that I use often but this site has helped so much in building my confidence. The "FORUMS" are a fantastic informal exchange of ideas and knowledge and I have also read the more research based articles which has helped immensely. That's why I would to become a member.
