I have a 4yo Appendix QH gelding that I've been riding/training for 1 1/2 years. Just recently, he has decided he doesn't know what lead I'm asking for when I ask for a canter. He didn't have this problem before, but now he just picks up whatever lead he chooses. I tried nubby spurs, then launchers ;o), but he just got very jumpy and constantly anticipated my request. I've decided to not wear the spurs and concentrate on leg pressure, but he is not consistent. Any tips or tricks would been appreciated.

Kathleen,

Do you use a voice cue for canter? If so, ask for canter and at the time you see/feel the horse set up for the canter, cue him for the lead he is already set to take. Time your cue to be simultaneous with the horse's take-off. If you continue and are consistent with cuing for what the horse is already giving you, you will be helping him learn that your cues mean what he is doing. Eventually, cue him correctly for canter before you use your voice cue, and see if he has "read" you correctly. It may take a couple of weeks of daily work, or he may process it one night in his sleep!
