Hello
I have recently purchased a pure bred arab gelding who is 5. He is currently being backed and I am due to start riding him on the lunge next week. I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions as to the best way to build up his strength and balance and how many times a week and for how long I should ride or lunge him. Also are there any things riding tips you can give me so that I can get the best out of him.
Thanks
Tanya

Start by long trotting him for 15 minutes a day for aweek, then move onto 20 minutes a day for a week until you can long trot for a 30 minute period of time every other day and stay with this program, it will keep your horse strong and his breathing will become more conditioned.

Tanya,
I would start by long, slow distance rides, first walking only, then slowly adding more and more trot. Listen to the horse as to when to increase amounts of time and/or speed. If possible, some small inclines and declines in terrain will help him to carry weight balanced. Our Arabs seem to condition more quickly than other breeds, but conditioning tendons and bone takes longer in any breed. What are you intending him to be used for?Hope this helps! Audra :-)
