Dr. O.,
My mare continues to have painful heats after her ovarian hematoma she had last year. Every 21 days, like clockwork, she parks out, is depressed, obviously in pain. The pain resolves with bute. Anyway, I was considering putting her on regumate to stop the heats altogether. I noticed it said the drug was prohibited under AHSA NFS rules. What are NFS rules? How is this different from TS rules?
Thanks,
Alicia

So, unless the hunter division goes with the TS rules, I only have to do the NFS rules, right? I guess I need to go to the AHSA site and see. Looks like only the endurance does the TS rules.

That doesn't sound right Alicia. The TS rules are frequently used but best to check with your associations rule book to be sure as these things change.

I e mailed the AHSA medications officer, and he said Regumate is legal in rated hunter divisions. I assume this would be the same for depo, as it is the same drug in a time release, right?

Here is the e mail I got.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hunters compete under Articles 410-412. Regumate is permitted by this rule.

Very good Alicia. Actually they are different drugs. While they are both progestins, act like progesterone, chemically they are a little different. I don't think this difference will hang you, but I cannot be sure. Better to ask about this medication directly.
