Seems there are at least several HA folks going to the World Cup in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks and the possibility of an informal get together was mentioned. Thoughts?

The best place I know of for Wine tasting would be Marche Bacchus, which is pretty far from the venue.

Incidentally, I have a friend who has 4 extra tickets for sale.

Chris, this is a great idea.

I arrive late in the evening on the 18th and fly home at 4:30 PM on the 22nd. I'm definitely up for a get together any time in between. It will be great to finally meet some of the folks who although faceless, have become so familiar.

What are everyone else's arrival/departure dates?

Stacy? Sara?

Sara, getting each other's cell numbers is a great idea. Shall we start a list here or would everyone prefer to do it offline?

Sara and Sue,

Agree about not posting cellphone numbers.

chrisbriding@ca.rr.com

The tickets are for the last 2 nights of the dressage competition. I'll verify when I'm home later today and can access the email downloaded from the server. I think she wanted $200/ticket but again will have to verify.

I'm driving from LA on the morning of the 18th and likely staying through the weekend, Las Vegas is my hometown, to visit family.

How about dinner or drinks on the evening of the 19th? The dressage starts at 12:30, the jumping at 7:00, so maybe a happy hour or early dinner?

Another possibility is simply tagging up near the trade show and feasting on the available junk food and beer/wine.

Hi all,

I would love to meet you guys. Unfortunately, my plane doesn't land until 5:25pm on Thursday.

I have 2 tickets for the Wednesday and 1 ticket for Thursday jumping that I won't be using if somebody wants them. dwinans@wm.com

What happens when you reply via email to a HA posting? I was multi-tasking while on the phone with Verizon, and replied to posting by Chris instead of emailing her!

Anyway, I'll be looking forward to meeting you both, Chris and Sue.

Hi Dawn,

Stay turned, we may end up getting together on a different day.

Are you only attending the jumping? If you're doing the dressage also, maybe we can still meet sometime.

In 2005 I watched both the jumping and the dressage. Frankly, it was too much and wore me out. This time, I'm just attending the dressage.

Hi Chris,

I'm only going to the jumping. I would have loved to see both but it was difficult enough to convince my non-horsey significant other to come to the jumping. I think he will appreciate the jumping a little more than the dressage.

Let's keep in touch and see if we can all meet up.

Just to say I envy you for going to Las Vegas - whether for dressage or show jumping!

Hope you can work out a get-to-gether, and am looking forward to some feedback.

Have fun!

Hi all! This is too exciting! I get into town Thursday early evening, staying at the Venetian, leaving on Sunday. I am going to two dressages, showjumping once on Friday night. I am up for anything, maybe meet for drinks before the Friday jumping if everyone is town. I also like the idea of a meet in the Trade fair, why not both? I'm so jealous of Sara, we'll want all the details of the behind-the-scenes drama. I do think we should try to schedule at least one hook-up event before we all get there, or we will be playing cell-phone tag with too many people... Stacy

Hi Ann, I'll be sure to raise a glass for you on multiple occasions at the event!
On the americantrakehner website there was a notice about TV broadcast of the event. It is supposed to be a 90 minute show on May 12th on Animal Planet, at 9pm EDT. If I spot the cameras, I could do something suitably Alabama-ish like paint my tummy with "HA.COM" and scream "Hi Mom!"
Wait, wait, I'm Canadian born, and my Mom will be with me... you'll just have to settle for the show....:-)

I just looked up profiles for all of you. You all look so young and elegant! I'll be the old lady, kinda wrinkled, a little plump, looking around for all you young "whipper-snappers!"

Stacey, sure wish I could talk my friend Ellen (who's jumping) into sticking around longer. She's also an MD and into TBs and WBs. You'd get along great! She had her office book her for Friday...bummer. Maybe I can talk her into cancelling all her patients!

I'm searching for rooms. Staying at Amerisuites through the 18th, but they have nothing available after that unless they get a cancellation. Could stay in my camper, but then have no transportation. I'll find something.

Cyndy, you wicked thing - the triple dog dare...hmmmm...
I didn't say anything about a belly ad being GOOD to look at, but after two kids in four years the act itself would be typical of the Bayou behavior I see in my adopted home!:-)

Stacey, Ellen loves jumping more than any person I've ever met! She is oblivious to rules, to how she or the horse look, and doesn't care where she is, as long as she can jump! So, another friend and I have been trying to teach her the "finer points" of showing. It's been an uphill battle!

She bred and raised Thomas, the horse she's using, and trained him. When he was born, his mother rejected him at first and they both lived here with me as she didn't have time to work with them. The mare accepted him after a few days. He lived here again when he was being weaned. He's a beautiful horse, though I may be a bit biased!

I'm a bit concerned about how Thomas will look, as he lives outside with her sheep most of the time, and is a little "rough" I guess you'd say. She's had him in the barn for a month and he's starting to shed, but will no doubt be a lot more hairy than the other horses there. I'm meeting Ellen tomorrow to gather up her tack for cleaning, and give Thomas his first trimming up. We can't clip as it's too close to the show. I'm thrilled for Ellen, and really excited about being able to go with her as a groom!

I just got a call from my friend Gwen and I think she's coming down to L.V. with me for the last weekend of the World Cup. She's an Arab breeder whose done a lot of endurance. She's retired from the Air Force; used to be head of maitenance for the Stealth. She's originally from Maine. I hope she doesn't get called in to work; she's really a lot of fun and a very knowledgable horse person.

I asked him if we would need to change our lesson and he said that they would just be there for the weekend. Chris, I am hoping to go see some dressage at Del Mar at the end of the month maybe I will meet you there. New to Dressage, Cynthia

Cyndy, maybe we can all make up a sign to wear around our necks! It's kind of short notice for HA t-shirts. I do just happen to have some pink Meadow Rose t-shirts and could wear one I figure I'll be easy to spot anyway, I'll be the dirty, tired one that still smells like a horse! Went to watch my friend Ellen jump today! Just watching her was exciting; I can't wait to watch the big name riders!

I'll be in Las Vegas from this coming Friday on through the end of the show, except for Wed. night and Thursday. So, whenever the rest of you arrive, just give me a call and we'll figure out a place to meet.

Cynthia, I've probably asked this before but my memory not so good: are you near Rancho Santa Fe? I went to H.S. in Encinitas and lived in Rancho for awhile and have a brother and sister-in-law about a mile from Mary's Tack and Del Mar show grounds. Maybe could meet you down there sometime?

Hi Cynthia,

Wasn't planning to go to Del Mar, but you never know. We're taking off camping after the World Cup, but I'm down there enough that we should be able to hook up eventually.

Regarding the HA.com on our bellies, I'll pass, no offense Dr. O. In 2005 my friend and I actually did end up on the broadcast, only because we were sitting in front of a, shall we say, very animated woman.

So everybody, maybe a get-together at the Food/Beverage area in the trade fair at 4pm or 5pm on Friday afternoon before the 7pm jumping? Could anyone make it, or interested? I was just thinking it would be good to have at least one contact point set up already so we weren't on our cells the whole time. I'm not sure I will have any coverage anyway. We could treat it like a group blind date, you know, coffee or drinks only, no dinner or sleepover committment...!!:-):-)

What! No sleep over? I could do that. How about the food and beverage area nearest the front entrance? I remember a place right in the front that sold bottled water (for way too much $!) How about there? It seems like there were several food places; do you remember?

This is going to be so much fun!

4-5 on Friday works for me! I'll be at the food and beverage area nearest the front entrance.

It's too bad we don't have HA caps with the logo that Christos created so that we can recognise each other. Speaking of Christos - I wonder where he is?

I guess we can just all look for people who are look like they are looking for somebody else.

Erika and Ann, pack up your bags and come on out! Although I'm staying at a friends, I still haven't cancelled my room reservations and you could use them. They are within an easy walk to the Thomas & Mack event center.

It's going to be so much fun!

Stacey, you could just hold up a small sign with "HA" on it and we can all find you. I'd still suggest meeting right in the main entrance area - where you go in if you walk up the middle section of the front steps.

As Ann said, there are plenty of places with stuff to drink, but our main toasting party should be somewhere else. Stuff is pricey at Thomas & Mack.

Ann, I go to L.V. to bargain hunt! I find stuff less expensive there than home. They do "rip" you at venues like ball parks, stadiums etc. on the food and drink though. One son and I went to a Jets game in Meadowlands and WATER was $5 a bottle !!!!

Sure wish you were going to be there, Ann!

Sigh, gone of the days of everything being cheap in Las Vegas as a loss-leader for gambling. But then, I'm dating myself...

That said, there are the places the locals go where things are priced the same or lower than in LA at least.

Don't know what the policy is on tail-gating...

I noticed that our girl (Blue Hors Matine) is going to be competing. Hopefully for you attendees, she will put in a performance like the one that circulated through this site!

I doubt that tail-gaiting is allowed in the even parking lot.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Matine!! I'll try and take photos; but I'm usually so engrossed in the performances that I forget.

My hubby's home from his trip so now I have to share the pc. Sara, I live in the Murrieta area near Temecula. A lot of people think of us as La Cresta but I am in the Tenaja Community in the back. I used to live in Orange County and I have a girlfriend who still lives in Trabuco Canyon. And my son works in Tustin and lives in Ladera Ranch. I'm sure that we could meet somewhere and have lunch or something. Maybe Chris, you would also be able to come too. Cynthia

I'll check on the tail-gaiting. I know that it is allowed at the UNLV football games, but then that is a football tradition.

Next trip down south I'll give you a heads up. Of course I go right through Temecula on I-15. I often stop for fuel there at the Shell station on the south side of town. It would be fun to meet.

I am getting more and more jealous. If there ever is another World Cup in Las Vegas I have to start working on my husband way ahead of time!!!!!

I hope Matine does well - I loved that video! Only one entry from Germany? The horse's name, Warum Nicht, means "Why Not". An interesting name.

We would like to see photos of the reunion!!!!

White shirt and HA name tag? I will be there! My hubby chooses not to attend, but he says I can and I'm taking him up on it. Sara, I will take your Fri/Sat night room reservations if they are still available. Guess it is for two beds, so if there is another female who is going alone, there will be room for you if you want to share. I can't believe it is actually working out! Nancy

Note to self - pack a white shirt. I'm 5'2" and dark blonde (grey actually but bottle blonde works wonders). Friday is brilliant for me too.

I wonder why Isabell is the only German competitor. Where are the rest of them? I was really hoping to see Hubertus Schmidt. I'd kill to ride like that man.

I'm dying to see Matine but also can't wait to see Briar. He is stunningly gorgeous.

Counting the sleeps...

OK then.

Friday, 4-5 at the beverage area nearest the main entrance.

White shirts, HA name tags.

I was surprised to see no Anky ...

Incidentally Sue, I go by "decided blonde"; that's the color I decided on instead of grey!!

I'm getting so excited about all this! I love watching the World Cup, and to meet all of you will be exciting! I've already set out a white shirt so I won't forget. I'd better go ahead and make a nametag and pin it on the shirt tonight, or I'll get down there and not have one! I'm living "by the lists" right now. I leave Friday for my show in Las Vegas with "my boys" and my sister-in-laws horse; show Sat. and Sun, then Lonnie is driving down with my truck on Sunday evening and driving the motorhome and horses back and I meet Ellen. She shows and I groom the first half of the week, then I come home for a couple of days and head back to L.V. Fri to meet you all and watch the finals! I'm going to be a "tired puppy" by the following Monday, but what a lot of fun!!

Oh, I'm 5'3" and have shoulder length reddish dark brown hair and glasses (unless I'm awake enough to wear my contacts.) Wheeeee. I wish the rest of you HA members were able to come! I'll take my digital video camera and try to remember to take pictures with it!

I hate to be the one to make a suggestion in a change of meeting place but I'm trying to imagine us all standing at the entrance between 4-5 looking for the rest of us in white shirts with name tags. Would it be more convenient to meet at the Hard Rock Cafe at the bar? I know the Hard Rock is walking distance to T&M. We could relax and have a drink there before heading to the arena for the 7:00 show. I think this sounds more enjoyable than standing at the main entrance. What do you think? If you do a Mapquest directions from T&M and Hard Rock you can see how close it is.

Let me know what you think - I am happy meeting wherever the general consensus is.

This is going to be so much fun!!!

Dawn,

I think it will be much easier to meet at The Thomas and Mack than at the Hard Rock; especially in the bar. I vote to stay with the current plan.

Hello All.

I've been out of touch for a few days and lost the track of the conversation. It looks like you are you all getting together in LV. What day, what time and where? If I can be there I will.
I'm really looking forward to this trip!

The Hard Rock! That place might send some of us older members into culture shock! Seriously, I think it would be easier still to meet and Thomas & Mack and then go from there.

PF Changs, btw, is one of my favorite places to eat, but is usually really busy. There are so many good places to eat in L.V. that I get dizzy thinking about them and can never decide! Where I live Sizzler's is considered great, so I'm restaurant deprived!

Well, if not culture shock at least audio-shock. I can't believe how loud that place is.

PF Changs is great as is the Hofbrau Haus. And there's always The Elbow Room

Dede, we are meeting at the beverage area nearest the main entrance of Thomas & Mack Center at 4-5 on Friday before the jumping. We are all wearing white shirts and a HA name tag so we can identify each other.

White shirts, maybe a white name tag as well? How about we use a marker and color the outer edge of the name tag in green? That will make it a bit different and easier to spot....

Sara, Sorry not to respond sooner, my husband is on the pc almost all the time, studying for his 6 month training next month. Pilots have training every 6 months and a flight physical every 6 months. That would be great, the exit is 79 south and there is a Carl's Jr. on the other side of the frwy. And further down are lots of choices of places to eat. So if you are passing through I would be happy to meet you. Cynthia

OK, six more "sleeps" before I get to leave for LV! You saying "counting the sleeps" gave me a smile Sue, my kids say that all the time as they begin to understand time progression. Will the whole place just be a madhouse?? I can't wait, especially since none of you will need me to take you to the potty!!
I reread the post to get a rough idea of how many people we should be looking for. I got Chris, Sue, Sara(with Gwen?), Stacy, Dawn, Dede, Nancy, and Ilona(a maybe?). Table for nine please sir, four bottles of your best red and keep'em coming...we've got a lot of toasting to do!!!

Sue,
Please email me at equus@cyberverse.com. Its the same email address you contacted me through several times. I don't know how else to reach you...I see that the accommodation is at Amerisuites. I have e-mailed you my phone number, you can email me yours and I will call. I'm I getting a bit nervous as we haven't made contact and we are to be staying at the same place and you have my ticket. I do hope there isn't a problem. I haven't become involved in this thread for fear that somehow it has all fallen through. I had planned on arriving on the Tuesday night or Wednesday morning but as I don't know what you had arranged re accommodation for us I can't book my flight. Please, please, contact me. We are at the eleventh hour now. As I said I have been e-mailing for months now.
I so look forward to hearing from you.

From an aritcle on equisearch.com:

"By Nancy Jaffer

Las Vegas, Nevada, April 18, 2007 -- There was disappointment all around this afternoon as Danish rider Andreas Helgstrand decided to bow out of the Rolex FEI World Cup Dressage Finals with Blue Hors Matine, the sensation of last year's World Equestrian Games.

The gray mare, who was one of the favorites to win here at the Thomas & Mack Center, slipped coming off a trailer on her arrival at the stables Sunday.

Her injury, a little soreness in her left front pastern, was not serious, and she seemed to be all right in training Monday and Tuesday. However, she was held by the ground jury yesterday after the trot-up, since she was slightly off. Although she was scheduled to be re-tested this morning, officials gave her until 3:30 this afternoon, in hopes that she would be fine.

HUGE BUMMER...

On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

I just got home last night from my grooming "job." What a wonderful experience!! We were in a different barn than the Europeans; they were in a quarantine barn nearby. However, all the horses used the same area between the barns for handwalking and the same wash areas and practice arenas. My pass allowed me to go everywhere except the quarantine barn. I saw so many beautiful horses!!

I was maybe 10 feet from Matinee while she was being handwalked one morning, and she passed within 5 ft. of me in the practice arena! She is lovely. What wonderful movement, even with her leg a little "off." She was just worked lightly the day I saw her. She has the most beautiful eyes, so soft looking, and very intelligent looking.

The all out most beautiful horse imo is the horse being ridden by Imke Schellekens-Bertels from the Netherlands. The horse is the mare Sunrise. As perfect in conformation as possible, and such movement and elevation. Something about her just drew me to her. The other horse that just was so beautiful it took your breath away was a black stallion, horse number 708, but I have no idea who he was or who is riding him or in what discipline! He was totally breathtaking whoever he is!!

Watching Imke ride was a thrill. She is so tall and lean and graceful, like a dancer. She sits on Summer and you don't see a muscle move. Imke make little "clucks" to Summer, and each series of clucks means something different. Three clucks and the horse takes off in a cantering half pass across the practice arena. A couple of clucks in a different tone and she is piaffing, a bit louder and the piaff become very large with moments of total suspension. So Beautiful!!

My pass allowed me to have breakfast and lunch plus snacks and soft drinks, tea, coffee, etc. in the Press Room with all the other horse people and riders. There were just long cafateria tables and everyone just sits down whereever there was a space. Most of the riders were in conversations with trainers while in there, but they all said "good morning" or "hello" and smiled at you.

I got to talk to Beezie Madden for a minute while walking back from the main arena; she's very friendly and nice and REALLY in shape. Rodrigo Pessoa said "good morning" to me while entering the barn area one a.m. (he's really quite small and has a "buzz" hair cut now.)

It's really pretty cool, because big name or not, horse people are horse people, and when watching jumping practice everyone stands arounds and makes comments to whoever is near them, etc. just like at any neighborhood show.

My friend Ellen did really good; she placed third in the Nevada Cup and got a huge neck ribbon for her horse to wear, and did a victory gallop around the arena along with the second and first place winners.

Those of you are coming, if you haven't left already, better leave the credit cards at home if you don't want to spend money. So many booths with wonderful leather goods, tack, blankets, etc. etc., lots of stuff for your horse and you.

I leave Friday with another friend to watch events Friday evening, Sat, and Sun. It will be fun, but after seeing the riders and horses so close, I don't think it will be so thrilling to see them from the event center seats.

Rodrigo Pessoa is a favorite of mine and of my husband's also. We love his style over the jumps. We'll be thinking of all of you at your re-union while we have our little re-union here in Colorado.

Just home! What a great week!!

To all of you HA members that I met in L.V....I loved meeting all of you! I'm sorry I didn't get to see more of you. I had intended to join you for breakfast, but my Gwen fell off a kitchen stool Saturday night (no, not a bar stool!) and landed hard on her knee. We got her into a chair and iced her knee, and what was intended as an early night turned into a late night, and I overslept this morning. I'm so sorry I missed you all again.

Gwen, btw, had not planned on staying for dinner at Pink Taco, but after meeting you all, she couldn't bring herself to leave. I think we've recruted a new member!

To all of you HA members that weren't in L.V....what great people we have on this board! I was late getting into L.V. due to heavy traffic and missed meeting "the group" at Thomas & Mack, so caught up with them at Hard Rock (thanks to cell phones!) It was like we'd all known each other for ages. What a friendly bunch of people. Horse people are the best! I loved them all, and am really looking forward to seeing them again in New Mexico this fall. I sure wish I could meet all of you. It's really fun finally seeing what people look like in person.

I took quite a few pictures and I think most of the others did, too. The World Cup was WONDERFUL! even without Matinee. What beauty..just breath taking! The jumping was breath taking also, and had some surprises. Both Beezie Madden and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum fell! Luckily, neither was hurt.

Most of the horses were making supreme efforts this afternoon. Many seemed to be really having to work. It seemed to me like quite a few were tired. I wonder if they didn't sleep good last night as they are in the middle of the ciy, and Las Vegas is really noisy on Saturday night.

Go to this site for the results:

http://events.horses.nl/2007/lasvegas/results/003-res.htm

I'm off to bed. Too much "living it up" for me, and I leave Tuesday to drive to So. Calif. to pick up Libby, and come home with her on Wednesday, so need to get some sleep.

I'm exhausted just reading your post, Sara. How great to have met some of our members and to have been part of such a colorful horsey event.

Do get your rest. So very happy to hear that Libby will soon be home. Don't be surprised if she suffers some initial depression when she gets home . . . Imagine how it would be to go off to a top hotel and spa . . . with servants all around you . . . for months . . . and then come home to your humble home and all the daily responsibilities that can become daily routine so easily. ;-) . . . I'd say you need to hire at least a couple of grooms and rent an air mattress for the first couple of weeks . . . just to ease her into her new schedule without too much trauma.
Looking forward to that toast. What night will that be? (I need to invest in a bottle of wine.)

I'm home myself, what a fantastic amazing trip!! My mouth is still agape and my eyes agoggling from all the decadent luxury in Las Vegas. The show was superwonderful - being close to a horse joyfully performing Grand Prix movements will move you to tears at times.
It was so fun to meet everyone at the Mack, and then have drinks and dinner together. We raised a glass immediately to "absent friends." I hope someone will post a group pic, as I didn't have a camera with me. I really enjoyed meeting Charlie and Gwen, our non-HA dinnermates, and hope to see them soon on the board. Thanks to Dr. O, for facilitating a site where horse folks can move to this level of friendship and support. I look so forward to our camping trip in the fall!! Stacy

Hi Holly! So good to "see" you.

I don't have time to be tired. Maybe when I get home from this next trip. The experience I had in Las Vegas is worth being tired! It was so much fun being "behind the scenes" in the barn areas. Funny how you just feel at home in places like that. Handlers, grooms, riders and horses from all over the world, yet an over-riding common interest that binds everyone together. Really great!

There was an added bonus having my pass; there was no expiration date on it. It was good for the entire week, so I never had to pay for parking ($10 ea. time you parked) and got to park in the "special" lot and use the back gate so no waiting in long lines of cars to exit!

Some of your fellow HA members sure have a love of the Hard Rock Cafe! You all may want to "rein them" in a little!

Hi Everyone, What a Great Show! I really enjoyed meeting all of you! Sara, what a lucky girl! I am beat but I am so glad we went. Charlie enjoyed it as well and learned something about dressage. This is going to keep me going for a long time. Lyn came out to give me a lesson this morning, Shimmeree had a whole week off but he thought it was good for her. My son Chris is coming home from England tomorrow evening. I can't wait to show him everything she has learned as well as the pictures of the World Cup. I am sure that he can help me put some of them on the HA. Do you all think that we should start a new Discussion, this one has gotten really long? Cynthia

Hi Cynthia! Yes, lets do a post-World Cup, or World Cup II to make is easier.

Chris, I'm sorry we didn't meet. I looked for you in the stands and think I found you. Am dying to see if I picked the right person!
