Hey everyone,

I had quite a scare last night and I'd like to remind everyone that rides on roads to please, please carry a light or reflective tape in a pocket or saddle bag.

I was coming home from the barn last night as the last light was fading from the sky. As I was driving down the road, I saw something, a shadow, I wasn't sure what it was so started to slow down. Suddenly, the white markings of a Paint showed up in my headlights and I slammed on the brakes. Three riders were on the road, side by side. The 2 solid colored horses were completely invisible in the gloom.

Normally, long before I get close to horses on the road I slow way down and swing as far around them as I can. I didn't have the chance last night and was nearly on top of them before I saw them. Fortunately I hit no one and the horses were trained enough that no one went crazy because I came right up on them.

I don't know if the riders were careless or got caught out in the dark without meaning to, but it nearly became a tragic accident...one that I would have had a very difficult time forgiving myself for.

So please, keep a flashlight or minor's lamp or something with you just in case.

That is a very good warning. Something similar happened to me right here in my neighborhood. The woman was leading her dark bay horse, with the almost black gelding following, loose. Reason was that the black gelding would not be caught, and the only way to get him home was to have him follow. But - they were almost invisible on the road ..... Very scary!
Thanks for the warning,
Lilo
