I am not sure where exactly to post this question so I chose this section. I have an older horse that has been living alone for some time. I would like to get him a companion horse. If I bought a weanling and had the two of them live together, would I have a hard time training the weanling to go under saddle and travel away from this gelding when the time came to begin training/riding in a few years? In other words, I am wondering if this living situation would create future behavior problems on the part of the youngster. I am asking how other's have or would handle this scenario. What kind of preventative training would you do with a foal to prevent separation problems later on?

Thanks...Debbie

Hello Debbie,
I think when you have just 2 horses there is more chance for a "buddy bound" situation to occur but this is a problem with any number of horses and will have to be trained for in most situations. Some horses just seem more prone to the problem than others.

You must simply separate the two periodically and not put them back together until the colt settles down and listens to do what you ask.
