When I take my horse on trailrides she becomes extremely agitated on rides (to the point of pitching a fit) if her stable compainion leaves and goes on ahead; same problem with the other horse. At home they come and go with no fuss, they can be ridden alone, stabled alone, tied up alone, and the're fine. Take them out in public and their like spoiled brats. They do live in a natural herd situtation coming in only in bad weather. So it's a training issue, and I'm not sure how to go about ending this problem. I've worked to stretch the invisible cord I tie them on either side of the trailer, and ride one away and come back then the other. But as soon as we're on the same ride it's hysterics again. I have tried gradually working my way back slowly to the end of the ride, but I still get the screaming tantrums if the other horse gets just a little bit to far ahead. Help!

I would try separating them totally for a month or two.

Did that for about three months while in training, did not help after being reunited with the herd. DJC

I would then try 4 to 6 months. I forgot to mention earlier we have a section where you can find others posting on this subject, see » Training Horses » Behavioral Problems » Separation Anxiety.
