A friend of mines horse had colic surgery. The vet said it would be 90 days before the horse would be ready to ride or use again. During recovery time, after surgery, she was walked twice a day increasing the walking time up to an hour near the end of the 90 days. But now that she's recovered from the surgery, when she is exercised or rode a bit, she seems really tired and sleepy. What are the steps in reconditioning a horse after surgery? When the owner rides her she wants to go lay down and sleep afterwards and seems to tired to trot at all. Is there a system to use to get her back up to speed? The owner has been very careful in not over working her but doesn't want her just to become lazy now either. Any suggestions on a program to get her conditioned enough to be rode normally again? Thanks, DJ

Hello Mason,
For many reasons we avoid second hand discussions but as general advice much depends on the nature of the surgery and how recovery has gone so this is really a question that the surgeon possibly in conjunction with your friend's veterinarian needs to answer following a exam. I can offer a article that explains conditioning in horses and how to monitor it but in this case it needs to be run by the horses veterinarian see Training & Conditioning Horses » Muscoskeletal Conditioning » Exercise Physiology and Conditioning.
