HI Dr. O
I really would like to get your opinion. At my boarding facility, my 4yo gelding is in an acre pasture with 2 other geldings, age 20 and 6. They get along pretty well. My 28yo mare just lost her pasture mate and had recently recovered from mastitis. Her paddock is about 1/3 acre. The management is pushing me to put my 2 horses together. My vet's opinion is they are already bonded and I could have some issues because of that if I were to put them together. Ideally I would like to see another older mare go in with her and keep the geldings together. Would you have any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Hello Cecelia,
Whenever horses are moved around you have issues: horses missing their buddies, horses establishing new herd positions, horses unfamiliar with the layout of their new home and the daily routes they take to and from their pasture. For some horses a move to some situations is no big deal for most there are self limiting problems that develop and then for a few serious problems develop. I am uncertain what will happen with your horses and the fact they are a mare and a gelding may slightly increase the chance you will have some problem.
