Hi All-

I am an equine clicker trainer in California. I'd love to hear from those of you who are just starting out and giving this method a try!

Hi Redmare,

I would love to learn more about clicker training. I tried a little bit of "touching the target", which was a little cone. However, my gelding caught on and whenever he saw the clicker, he came to me for treats as in: clicker equals treats! I would like to use the clicker to train him to take a bath - he is really bad about having a water spray hit him. I will have to wait until summer, but I could introduce clicker training to him for other items.

Thanks for suggesting this,

Lilo

Hi Lilo-

Targeting is the best way to start. Have you read Clicker Training For Your Horse and The Click That Teaches by Alexandra Kurland? If not, I recommend it. Both books give a lot of good tips and step-by-step ways of progressing.

You can use the clicker for some other tasks until the weather is fair enough for bathing. Hoof handling, grooming, and leading are all good subjects. This will help your horse understand that the clicker and treats can appear at any time, not just when you have the cone.
