  Discussion on New Training Technique

I want to share a new technique I learned last night at feeding time.

I’ve been working with Jasper, our new horse, on respecting my space when I come into the stall to feed him. This has consisted of asking him to stand in the corner until I cue him that it’s ok to come and get it. I have been carrying a lunge whip as a helpful enforcer, but he has gotten so good that I haven’t been using it in the last week….however, as horses will do, he decided three days ago that he didn’t like the “respect the space” exercise. To express his displeasure and impatience, he began giving a little squeal and little jump when I opened the door—and did not go to the corner like a good boy. So back out came the lunge whip—esp. since on Tuesday night he decided to swing his butt too….

Last night, I got the typical spoiled behavior. I had the lunge whip ready when he turned his rear in my direction. Intending to give him a gentle reminder that pointing rear ends at people is not allowed, I held out the end of the whip to give him a little jab to move him over. Now, had I practiced this move for three weeks and then tried to execute it, I never would have been able to do what I did last night. The intended path of the lunge whip and the slight move to the right of Jasper’s rear coincided to produce the most strategic placement of a whip I’ve ever seen…as well as the most interesting look on a horse’s face I’ve ever seen!

I call this the “rectal correction,” and I can only say that its effectiveness is amazing. Jasper could not get far enough into the corner this morning. I didn’t even have to carry the whip.

Thats too funny. I believe I would stay in the corner too, if that happened to me!

I'll never be able to carry a lunge whip again without thinking of your story, Terri!

I'm still laughing!

Just think what this training technique would do to help strengthen a rider's 2-point on the longe!

Christos, if you're not a comedian, then you missed your calling.

Speaking of Christos, does anyone know why he quit posting. I know he was concerned that he was spending way to much time here but he has been cold turkey for quite some time.

Whoa! This is too weird. Terri and I were e-mailing today, and mentioned that he hadn't been on for awhile, and then Pepette posted, and now Dr. O. is asking . . . Must be that he is thinking of us . . . if not, then, at least, his ears must be burning.

I thought I remember him saying that he was coming to the US (or at least travelling) for a while? Altho I thought it was just for the summer. Christos, if you are out there...let us know you are well...

I think his profile said he was in the military, so maybe he's shipped out somewhere or just has an unpredictable schedule as of late?!?

I guess we are not getting an answer from Christos, but, I agree with all. He had the best and most helpful posts with regard to training.
Hope we will hear from him again.

I'm glad Lilo qualifed that last comment with "most helpful posts with regard to training. I seem to remember some pretty interesting threads about politics. And two-by-fours. :-)

I think when Christos answered on one of my posts last summer he said he was based in Achen for a while during this winter. As I also miss his comments I hope this will be temporary.
