Discussion on Feeding multiple horses in a pasture

I have 5 horses to feed in the pasture. It can get very rowdy at feeding time. I have taught all of my horses to stay out of my personal space and not crowd the feed bucket with a few simple excercises. At first I take a lunge whip out with me. Any horse that gets within 3 feet gets a poke with the end. Not hard just enough that they move away from the pressure. Next at each feeder, have the horse do something before being allowed to step up and eat. My horses all must back-up at least three steps and turn their head to the side. Just like teaching any horse anything. Start small - your horse "thinks back", reward him by allowing him eat. Next day expect more and so on. My small herd has gone from a free for all to a orderly well mannered group.
