I have always loved running poles ever since I was young un'. Even english riders should appreciate pole bending..it teaches bend, lead changes and rating. Well my poles have been tree sticks stuck in the ground. Now that I have my arena I thought that a little "tacky" looking, so went online looking for pole bending sets...they ran about $300 for a set of bases and poles. Sorry I could buy alot of things with $300.

So went searching at walmart for maybe some ideas for making my own. A-HA outdoor umbrella bases, $5 on closeout 6 of them needed $30. Off to the hardware store 1 inch pvc pipe $3 so 6 for $18.

I built a very nice pole bending set for $50. Trying it out tomorrow!!!!

Great idea, Diane! I don't do pole bending, tho' I did when a teenager (back in the dark ages!) However, I'm betting those umbrella bases could be used for other useful things. I'll bet there are some other things useful there, too. I'm going to Walmart when I get home as you've given me some ideas for cavaletti bases and arena markers.

Sara, you gave me a great idea! I would have never thought of adding a base at the other end of the pole and have some jumps. The poles come out of the bases very easily, so when we are done pole bending we can jump.. With a very easy switch over. THANKS

The pole bending set looks great, I was so thrilled, never thought I would be able to afford one AND now we will have "jumps" too!
