Hank is now being stall/paddock rested, herd mates are out but he can see them.

Hank has always been out 24/7 and confinement (especially without his pals drives him over the edge.

Since he is a hog I tried to figure out some kind of treat that would keep him amused for awhile. Alfalfa pellets are one of his favorite foods. I filled his hangover feeder up almost to the top with water (about 3 gals.) and let him watch me pour some alfalfa pellets in it(gave him a little bite of them first to entice him) He has been out bobbing for alfalfa pellets for the last hour + he is getting extra water in him...he is so funny he dunks his whole head in grabs some pellets and sneezes and blows! I hope he don't drown himself Low carb, more hydration, and no boredom.

Diane, YOU are priceless! That is just hysterical and only you would think of it.

As for his fetlock - I personally, think there's something in there that's begging to come out. Hope it does soon.

Hugs, Shirl

Diane,

Forgot this suggestion. Get a mirror with unbreakable glass, hang in his stall. That generally helps keep them amused.

Hi Diane,
A couple years ago my filly had to have surgery and was confined to her stall. It was pretty warm so I thought it might be fun to give her a cool treat. I dissolved a peppermint candy in a couple cups of water in a plastic tub and put a loop of baling twine in it. I froze it and after removing it from the tub, I hung it in her stall. At first she didn't know what to do with it so I put between her and my arab gelding's stall and he quickly went after it. Soon they both were licking and chewing on it. You will need to rinse of the area where it drips or it will attract flies but it was fun to watch them go after it.

Cynthia how neat! Horse people are so inventive!

I think I'd be tempted to put the "popscicle in a tub that way it wouldn't melt on everything and they would slurp up the melted water.

These are good ideas for extra hydration too! I may try the peppermint popscicle! Thanks

Your welcome Diane, I know how hard it is to keep them cooped up. The tub is a good idea, I guess I was thinking about those Lickit hanging treats when I made it.

I wonder if they get a head freeze?

On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots.

They have to have a brain for head freeze...I think Hank is safe from it.

I wonder if you filled a bucket up with flavored water..like peppermint, apple, apple juice, licorice ect and froze it until it was slush if they would like it...HMMMM a horse slushy...could even add a dash of vodka for the crazy ones!

I get those bags of green/white mints at Wally WOrld and freeze them in icecube trays. I will put about 5 of the mint cubes in a bucket and then a bunch more of plain ice cubes. I also keep a bucket of regular water in the stall just to see what goes and what doesn't. The minted bucket is always at the lower level when I check on them later. My kids all like the green mints better than the red ones. $1 a bag! Sometimes I cut up apples or watermelon chunks for them and throw that in the water bucket. I have also made apple juice cubes, that did not go over as well as the mint. Go figure
