I have a pony who is a just backed 3 year old. He has the most unflappable temperament but seems to be quite lazy, in hand or under saddle. Is this something that can be sharpened up with training, or is he always likely to be on the slow side and hard work? I've had young horses who are very forward going off my leg, but this pony is a challenge of the other extreme!

He could just be really "laid back." But, I would look a physical causes for the way he is acting. What kind of condition is he in? What is he getting fed? A lot of times a horse will seem slow and lazy because they aren't getting the right nutrition, or because they have something physically wrong with them that might not be obvious.
