I 'm training a 3 yo QH that is really right leaded when ridden. On the ground work, lunge line, roll backs he picks it up every time. I have been starting colts for 20 years and I've never had this much of a problem. I even bought Larry Trocha's CD on the subject. I've used every trick I know including rollbacks on the fence and tight and loose circles. He continues to counter canter. When he does pick it up he won't stay in but a few minutes eveb with the right leg/spur cue. He is very supple and willing. A nice colt but I'm starting him for a barrell racer so he has got to have flying lead changes. He has 90 days riding on him and I have had him for 3 weeks. Need suggestions plz!!!}}}

Maybe do less than a few minutes at a time, but repeat the cue and gradually extend the time. Also double check how you are balanced to help him with carrying your weight on an uncomfortable lead. Check out some of the work by Eitan Bethalachmy. He's a leader in "western dressage" and explains thing extremely well...he's particularly good with his combination of equine anatomical structure/function and the a riders ability to help with that in mind. I spend about an hour at a time working this colt on picking up the left lead. We work from a stand still, trot and canter. I let him make the mistake, stop and back him up and try again. I've tried big left circles working to small circles and he counter canters beautifully. I've tried the fence, fence corners and rollbacks.. Nothing on Trocha's DVD worked. Lounge line or round pen free work he never misses it or crossfires. I'm going to have him adjusted and hope that's the problem. I will take your suggestion and review articles by Mr.Bethalachmy. Thanks for the suggestion, I;m at wits end because this is a really nice well bred colt. Rube
