Last New Years eve was the first time I've had my 4 year old TB gelding during a fireworks display. I think the neighbors were actually setting off some low grade dynamite. The TB got so wound up he managed to get all three of the horses running around in a total state of panick. The result was my other gelding ended up with suspensory ligament damage. Ugh! Now we're approaching July 4th and I dread what the neighbors have in store. We dont know them or I'd go over and ask what to expect but around here I think it's best to mind my own business.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can keep the horses calmer and safe this time? They are on pasture 24/7 with a nice 12x24 shelter. I do have two 12x12 panel stalls for feeding inside the pasture. I also have a 50' round pen. Just no barn. My farrier told me sometimes people in rodeos put tampons in the horses ears! I am actually thinking I might try it.

Any ideas?

There is an ongoing and very active discussion on this topic. Have a look at the thread entitled "Arabian Terrified of Fireworks."
