Hi--I have so enjoyed all the comments I have received from previous questions and I look forward to any feedback on this one. I have a 1 1/2 year old Stubben Siegfried saddle that has developed a squeak. I took it to the saddlery where they said it was in excellent shape -- just the way it should be (I clean it each time it is ridden in and oil it properly). The leather on the right panel seems to rubbing together, creating a squeak, which is like trying to read a book, with a leaky faucet dripping - it is driving me crazy. They had a couple of comments: 1)that there was nothing wrong with the saddle; 2) that it wasn't completely broken in; 3)they had seen even more expensive saddles than mine, squeak; 4) that I might try moving it back ever so slightly on the horse and 5) that I need to get some Murphy's Oil Soap PASTE - not the liquid, but the paste and rub a generous amount in the area under the panel, from where the squeak seems to be coming. I unfortunately have not been able to locate Murphy's Oil Soap Paste. Has anyone had this problem and if so, can you recommend an alternative to me, other than the Murphy's Paste? I appreciate any comments and hope everyone's Thanksgiving was wonderful. Rhonda |

I read just this month a recommendation from a well respected saddle maker to use baby powder for stopping squeaks in saddles. DrO |

Although these posts were from '99, I am adding a message because today i received a wonderful new saddle, ordered from National Bridle Company with the tennessean bars. it fits my arab mare and me beautifully, but it squeaks so loud, all over, that I wonder where I would put the baby powder, do I rub it in? And any other ideas on how to minimize the squeaks (extreme) of a brand new leather western saddle. |

Answering my own post! I called the saddle company for info and yes, baby powder is the secret. You lay out the saddle upside down (I imagine on an old sheet or piece of plastic), spread out the fenders and and sprinkle the powder in all folds and crevices. Then you lift the saddle, turn right side up and shake out the excess powder. Was told this eliminates 90% of the squeaks. I will try soon and let you all know how it works. |

Linda - You made my day with this post - I have an old but light western saddle I use for daily use and it does not seem to matter how much leather conditioner and cleaner I use the darn this still squeaks really badly - I am heading to the barn tonight armed with baby powder!! thanks Janet Schmidt |

Linda, Is your Tennessean the dark one with the brass fittings? I have had mine a year and have tried everything anyone has suggested to quiet it down, with no luck (including powder). These saddles are made by Crates and are wonderful...except for the noise!! Let me know how the powder works for you Paula |

I have a Tennessean saddle. Great saddle, but boy did it squeak. I couldn't talk to anyone on the trail. Let me just add my 2 cents worth that the baby powder works like magic. You have to use a lot and you've really got to get it up in there. My saddle was pretty messy for awhile, but boy did it ever work slick! And smell good too! |

Happy to report that the baby powder worked very nicely. Sherri is correct, you do have to get it sprinkled down in all the crevices. We went on a nice trail ride right after my powder treatment and nary a sound. I'm wondering if another deep sprikle may have worked for Paula? |

I had to do mine twice also, but only because I was being stingy with the baby powder the first time. You have to turn the saddle upside down, use a whole bottle if you have to, shake it into those crevices but good....shake it out, and and then just let the rest slowly filter out. Bingo! You're done! It's like magic! |
