My daughter would like to do some fundraising for her horse related activities by making and selling rhythm beads. Does anyone have advice on appropriate sizes and materials to ensure the necklaces are safe. I've seen pictures of these but never actually seen one in person. Thanks for your input.

I'm waiting to find out what "rhythm beads" are . . . don't believe I've ever heard of them.

The legend of the rhythm beads can be read at the above website. If you scroll to the bottom of the page you can click on numerous different styles.

Rhythm beads are used a lot by people who ride gaited horses to assist in getting 'good gait'. Tennessee walking horses will sometimes flick their ears back and forth in time with their gait and along with the head nod some will actually click their teeth in time to their 4 beat gait (mine does this). The rhythm beads have a similar affect.

I think this is a great idea for your daughter! I've never heard of Rhythm beads before, but loved the legend and idea behind them after reading about them.

It's interesting that the Bedouin tribes people have beads for their horses, also. They are about the size of small marbles strung on heavy string. The ones I have are blue and white. The blue is for good luck. At the end of the string is what looks like a "nadja" that the Navajo often use. The one on my beads is silver and is shaped like a quarter moon, ending in two hands which hold a large blue stone. It represents the eye of Allah (or so I've been told) and is supposed to keep the horse safe and healthy. I was given the beads by an Egyptian friend to use on my favorite mare when she foaled.

Thanks for a great thread!
