Our riding club wears cowboy hats when we ride in uniform for parades. We have several parents who will not let their children ride without their helmets, for obvious reasons. Someone stated there was a helmet that a regular cowboy hat would fit over to allow for safety but also the "western" look. Has anyone ever heard of this? If so, where might we be able to get these?

Melissa, I believe Lexington was the manufacturer of the helmets with the cowboy hat cover . . . and I have searched and can't find them. If you DID find any used ones, they probably would be outdated. Maybe they just weren't big sellers. I wonder if you could get schooling helmets without visors and put extra large cowboy hats on top??

I used to see those helmets in several different catalogs but haven't really noticed them lately. Maybe if you did an internet search now that you know the mfg.?

I, too, have looked and looked for the western hat helmet but have not been able to find it. I've seen a picture of it in a riding magazine but no resource where to get one. I'd be very interested in getting one because I feel it's high time the western riders take head protection seriously. Showing rules in the western pleasure classes specify you must wear a cowboy hat. Only speed events require a helmet. But an accident can happen in any discipline. All points bulletin for a western hat helmet!

I don't t think they were big sellers because they were still bulky on top which made the hat look unlike the western cowboy hat. The bulk is necessary in order to provide protection to the ASTM standards.

My daughter showed western for a number of years (to my horror as a through and through hunter rider - lol). I always had her wear a traditional english helmet except for the in hand classes. To me the safety is more important then the look!

At 18 she can choose style over safety if she chooses. Hopefully by then she too will have learned what is truly most important!

Ella :-)

Melissa,
I was recently going through my catalogues and magazines and saw a Western Helmet...it was a western hat fortified as a riding helmet..I cannot remember exactly where I saw this....so give me some time and I will locate it for you...my fiancee NEVER throws away any horse related written material, and I haven't had a chance recently to do a clean out, so, it is here somewhere. You are an angel, Ilona. I have done many searches on Lexington, just as had, to no avail. I too though about the schooling helmet without the visor with a hat, but was going to try and exhaust all other avenues first, as I believe it would be difficult to find a cowboy hat large enough to cover a helmet, even for a kid.

I called Wise Choice Tack shop in Lexington, KY about the cowboy hat helmet they carried years ago. Apparently, they stopped carrying this helmet about 7-8 years ago. It did not sell well because it was just too big and cumbersome for most people. The helmet was produced by Lexington Safety Products, who have since filed bankruptcy and are no longer in business. The tack shop has had numerous calls for this helmet, though. Whoever can create and market a nice looking cowboy helmet will become a millionaire! Many safety-conscience people are looking for exactly that. Please contact the helmet companies and put the bug in their ear. I personally don't feel the currently available "western styled" helmet is very western styled, do you?
