I don't know if it's just because it's Spring or what..but my TWH is 4 and he thinks he's a race horse when being led. He's very gentle and cooperative and fine when being ridden but likes to walk ahead of me sometimes while being led, prances around me and will even walk right into me, pushing me out of the way. This is not acceptable, and I need some good advice on how to make him stop. I've tried stopping him and backing him up, and making him stand still for a moment or two, but it hasn't worked yet. Some days he's just fine. Is he just showing off? I've tried walking him behind my husband's QH to try and slow him down and this sometimes works, but not always. I'm tired of yarding on his lead shank. My right arm is getting a better workout than he is. Another question...is there a way to train a horse to take a treat with his lips instead of his teeth? I'm afraid he's going to take a chomp out of my hand one of these days. Everything else about this horse is wonderful, he's great around his feet, stands still for the farrier, while being saddled, is smart and willing and has a rack and canter to die for. I just don't want any quirks to become bad habits.

Concerning the manners while in hand this is not unusual for a horse that has had no consistant lessons on leading. Perhaps you just need to realize he is not going to learn this overnight. But if your arms are getting tired, perhaps you need a little more leverage see, Training Horses: Training the Mind of Your Horse: Halter Training for some ideas. If he is inclined to nip when fed by hand, I would quit feeding with my fingers.
