Here is a link posted on another site about a 3M mat being sold as an expensive saddle pad

Janet, that's really weird...I have been suggesting to people on this website to buy rubber webbing for throw rugs to use as a nonslip saddle pad liner. It has worked great for me. I have seen the same material sold as saddle pads, just shaped differently, and costing a lot more money. Although this appears to be a different material than what I was talking about.
I guess what I am wondering is, are you saying it is a dangerous product, or just that it is being sold as a rip-off? The quote about the guy who rode 150 miles in the desert and ruined his horse's back sounds a little (pardon me!) stupid. Who in their right mind would use an untested piece of equipment for so long a ride, without an alternative? I don't think I would put it on my horse again if "at first it rubbed off the hair".
As to the rip-off situation being the objectionable reason, I agree that a lot of products that can be found much cheaper are sold to horsemen for a lot more money. Perfect example is a stall latch I once bought for my barn at a horse store for around twenty dollars, only to have my builder find an identical one at the lumberyard for less than five.
Anyway, very interesting to me that this is causing such discussion. I am eager to hear what other members have to say about it.

Erika - I am not "saying anything" just found it very interesting. I don't have one of these. Same thing with the big price on items - I bought my daughter a tack/brush box for 4.99 at our local grocery store - the exact same one at the horse section in the lumber store was triple the price - so it all depends on where you shop and how creative you get. I had not read about the guy who rode the 150 miles so will go search that out!

Went on the search and also read about the Genghis Khan's Saddle Pad!! What an amazing story - worth the read alone! As my brain was digesting it I started to think that there is a supply of horse tails (unfortunately) as so many horses are sent to the slaughter houses. I know that is an uphill battle in itself and a totally different subject but maybe some creative person could put them to good use.

Sorry, it was 120 kilometers in the desert, under the link of correspondence at the bottom of the page. Just thought it was a little silly. I didn't mean to attack you, Janet.
What is the Genghis Khan pad? Made of horse hair? I'll do a search on it to see if I find it.
