Hello all, some time ago I asked information on arabs because I had acquired one and had no experience with the race.
Well the lady has arrived and is everything you told me she would be, lively very attached to and gentle with people. On the other hand she had hurt herself in the stable [had two swollen legs and pain in her backbut nothing serious] was loaded with parasites had greasy heel and on the whole had not enjoyed her stay at the training facility[4 months ]
At this moment we have fixed this problems [ofcourse according to the advice of this site works wonders] and she lives with an arab cross mare she knows very well in one paddock of about three acres with two walk in stables, next to my other two[big] horses who have two walk in stables with 9acres.
Her companion is the only horse at this moment who leaves from time to time for the forest for an hour or so. If Grasse leaves Acacja[the arab] gets upset and galops about screaming for her friend.I dont like her to be upset she has gone through enough this winter and I could put her in with my two[who are bij the way NEVER out of sight]Ofcourse then they will play like idiots and galop anyway but perhaps she would be less scared to be left alone. The problem lies in putting her back with Grasse[less food smaller paddock] I need to stable everyone to be able to arrange this.
What would you do?
Jos

jos, I just read this while doing a search on separation anxiety. I don't see any responses to your question. Did you ever receive any advice/suggestions on another site?

Hi Sara, no I didn't so I experimented on my own,
loaned extra horse and then extra horses for the extra horse if Akacja went with the other one on a ride
Until I had horses in three paddocks and me working like an idiot to keep everyone separated and in with the right friends mowing the grass to avoid to fat horses in one paddock and feeding other ones to avoid to slim.
After a while I had had enough and went back to the 'Dutch system'everyone together introducing slowly, forcing the owner of the fat one to work her regularly[ she already exercised a whole lot more with 5 of them together by the way] a small paddock for anyone who really gets dangerously fat[until now not needed to use it] and of course no stallions. As soon as I do have stallions I will need a second group [for the young ones] ofcourse but at the moment thats no issue.
Funny thing is the horses are [like they always were with me before] none of them frightened or anxious anymore if they need to do work on their own because they know they will be put back with their friends, they even seem to enjoy'quality time' with people.
Mind you it took a year before everyone got used to and secure in this system[and I am not talking about the other owners they still get upset]

My arab gets agitated and nervous when the other horse is out alone. I have been working on the separation Anexiety in slow small increments. By that I mean I take the big horse away for a little bit. then come back in 30 seconds, (away as in out of site) then next circle - one minute. to up to 30 minutes at one shot. Very Slowly incrementing the time slots.
this way he sees his buddy is coming back. So far we are good for a long time before I hear the cries and whinnies again. but it is working. He used to work himself up to a lather when we separated them now they are getting quite cool with it - to the point I am ready to do a 1 - 2 hour trip out of the valley with the big horse.
you may want to try that? do you have a place in site then sligthtly out of site where you could ride ?
