Hey all ...
I felt guilty responding to this issue on the "spooking" thread, so thought I would start new thread. Sean, I hope you get this post. Please check adjustment of hobbles. if your horse is getting cuts on the rear legs, hobbles may be too short. If the horse stays on pace, rear legs should rarely even touch the hobbles, unless they are too short. Also, how fast are you going? If asked for too much speed, the horse will naturally leave the pace for a more comfortable and efficient gait, much like a western horse will leave trot for lope, lope for gallop, gallop for run when asked for speed. I suspect this is the case since you post he only does this on the return trip, so perhaps you need to adjust your driving until he understands that he is not allowed to run home. This is not unusual for any breed or gait of the horse..
