I bought a ten year old QH that was trained in English riding. What i want to do with him now is ride him western. Well, really i want to team pen on him. I've taken him to a couple of practices and he's really catching on. What my problem is, is that he doesn't know how to stop on his rear-end and turn over it. We always end up doing a small circle. I've been working on him at home to stop and back up about ten steps and then using my outside foot to help pick him up and move his front around. But he is always trying to walk out of it to make his small circle. Does anyone have any advice of what else might work? Thanks, Brandie

Hi Brandie,

if you have access to a round pen then you can teach him somewhat easier then by riding him. The idea is to get him going in one direction and then
stop him, and get him to go the other direction. Initially, you allow these to be very seperate movements and don't worry about the gaits. As he gets the idea, he'll respond faster. Initially, I would do it at the trot and then at the lope. Right now, your horse does not have a clue what you are asking him to do. Teach him on the ground first and then transfer it to under saddle work.

good luck

Teresa
