Well here is the story. We have a wonderful 11 year old apendix quarter horse that was raced most of her life, flat tacked for 4 years and raced on chariots for 3 years. My husband has discovered a new "hobby" in team roping and has been borowing a horse to learn himself. Now he would like to train our mare to rope. The problems he is running into are this, first was a fear of the indoor arena, but she is over that one. you can stand on the ground and throw the rope at her feet all day and it doesnt bother her, but when you get on her and just sit with the rope at your side she nerves up something fierce. At first the gate opening didnt bother her, I think she was used to it from her racing days, but lately she just spins in the box when the gate opens. At a stand still he can throw the rope from her and she is fine, she even drags the barrel fine. The steers dont frighten her, and without a rope she will run one down. But something about the rope while riding her is an obstical he cant seem to get over with her. He is about ready to give up on her and I know with the right training she can do it. I am asking for help for purely selfish reasons cause if he gives up on her he will then want to buy a rope horse, and I just got through buying a American Curly for myself and I dont want to fork out the money for another horse(haha) Does anyone have any ideas on this, books?, Videos? anthing that will help him. I am not familiar with Rope horse training myself so I dont know what book and videos are available. All suggestions apreciated. |

Hi there, Hmm..why not send her out for 30/60 days of prof. roping training. Invest 600 bucks into her. This would still be less expensive than purchasing a new roping horse. Cheers, Julie D. |

You can also try packing that rope with 100% of the time, feeding, grooming, etc. When she gets comfotable with your carrying it and realizes that nothing is gonna eat her then start waving it around. Increase the stimulus in baby steps only moving up when she is comfortable, if she panics about a step, back off and move in smaller steps. OOoooor..... Buy another Curly! :0) Cuz everybody knows they are FEARLESS! ... Yup I own one too and you just can't beat 'em! |
