Correct Lope or Canter Leads in Horses

Posted by Leisa
Subject: correct lope / canter leads

Help! I own an 9 year old percheron/appaloosa who wasn't brokeuntil he was 6 (I have owned him for 9 months). I have problemsgetting him to take the correct lead when loping to the right. He works beautifully to the left.

I have been riding for longer than I care to mention and workwith a professional instructor/trainer who also can't figure outwhy this horse refuses to pick up his right lead. Most horseswill eventually pick up the correct lead for balance, not thisguy.

We have eliminated rider error, since he also picks up theincorrect lead when on the lunge line, that is, if you can gethim to lope at all to the right, again, no problems loping to theleft, which he happily does on voice command only.

We made a breakthrough this week and actually managed to get theright lead by dramatically over-exaggerating the aids. I waswondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem Suggestions and training exercises would be greatly appreciated.
