I have 3 geldings that are turned out together-a 3yo, 4yo and 15yo. The oldest has always been the big man since the group has been together. Lately however the 4yo is really going after the 15yo-playing hard and biting alot. Much more aggressive than normal.

Can the herd position change like this? I know the older gelding is having some health trouble-slight arthritis and some allergy trouble. Is his position being challenged because he is weaker?

I was simply curious... thanks.

Oh-I have made other arrangements for my old man-he will have a new friend who is a bit calmer!

Hi, :Lynne,
The answer to your question is, "Yes, herd dynamics can change." Younger horses will challenge older ones, and if the older ones are not feeling strong enough to put the young ones "in their place" (particularly due to health issues) the younger ones will gain the dominant position. Most likely, your horses will work it out, but right now they are going through the transition. If your older horse is too weak or unable to respond in his original, dominant manner, he will get picked on until the new order is firmly established. You are saving him some stress and bruises by moving him to "greener pastures," and I bet he is thanking you inside.
