Can anyone explain Private Treaty to me? I am looking for a specific breed of stallion to breed my mare to and saw one for sale by private treaty. I don't want to buy a stallion but can anyone explain the real ins and outs of private treaty and whether the owners are likely to still want to breed him - and what pitfalls a private treaty breeding might entail?

Thanks!

It is my understanding that "Private Treaty" allows the stallion owner to pick and choose which mares they allow they stallion to be bred to. They may vary the breeding fee if the mare is especially to their liking.

This protects them from having to breed their stallion to any old mare whose owner can pay the breeding fee and tries to assure that the stallion's get are of quality.

There may be some legal nuances, too.
