a good friend of mine asked me to come look at his gelding who had been unstable on his back legs and he was looking to put the horse down.
as this is a last resort i said i would come up and check him over. the horse was much differnent to the last time i saw him. flinched when you touched him and would fall and stumble around in a light lunge his gum colour in great eyes are clear no temp i held up for 15 sec each of his back leg then walked him off and no change in severity of symptons owner mentioned that after light work the day before he seemed a little better. four months of continual rain and little excercise only on pasture not losing weight. thinking he has a build up of toxins in his systom?

Welcome Tracey,
What kind of toxin do you think the horse is ingesting?

Tracey let me help you get started off right. You should use proper punctuation and capitalization to help others read your posts. If folks find your posts harder to read you will get fewer replies.

Bottletop is, I suspect tying up without exercise. I gave him a dose of epsom salts and within a half an hour he was sweating, had urinated and moved his bowels. On walking him back to his paddock we noticed improvement in his gait and action. I havn't been able to find anything of interest in his paddock. Big head maybe in a mild form. At first his owner thought he had been bitten by a snake

He may have been tying up but do not see any evidence of it from the information we have been provided.

The Epsom salts would still be mostly in his stomach and duodenum in the first 1/2 hour and therefor not effect any of the physiologic functions you describe.

Was there evidence of a snake bite somewhere?

Hi Tracey, sorry to hear about your friend's horse. How long has he been exhibiting the symptoms you describe?
